Default Should I try to install the Inner Primary Cover?

Well, it's going on an 06 SG.
My local dealer said it would be around $250 in labor.
Is it that bad, or can the average mechanical joe tackle it?

If it's not that bad, what tools would I need?
Thanks.

If you are mechanical at all it is not to bad. You will need to get a service manual though. It has all the torque sequences etc.
Also you will need torx, and allen wrenches. A 30 mm deep socket for the clutch hub nut. And the new Primary drive locking tool, (a steel bar about 1/4" thick 1 1/2" wide by 7 1/2" long).

im a tech and its not bad to do yourself, the main thing i can tell you is the clutch hub is reverse theds and the torque is 150 ft lbs, thats alot, its a handful to get it there, the compensating nut is 75 ft lbs, and all of your outer allen bolt to hold the inner and outer primary covers together is 120in lbs, and also you have to take the starter bolts out which are really fun to get to. If you think you have the tools and some mechanical ability itsd not hard, but if you dont then you are way better off to take it to the dealer

Last time I did my EVO's inner primary a few years ago, it took me about 4-5 hours taking my time. Also had to remove the inner primary to do 18 front sprocket changes on vintage 3 Brit bikes which is basically the same deal as Harley's. It's not too bad for the average guy who wrenches his own bikes. Get the shop manual and dig in!

I think the 06's use special self sealing inner primary bolts that will have to be replaced once they are removed. Maybe somebody has the part number for em.

Glad to see another Harley Tech on the board. This place is getting better and better every day! Schweet!

I would recommend you get a shop manual and make sure you stay at a Holiday Inn express the night before.....

Well......I took step #1 today.

Got the service manual. Gonna look it over real good before I dive in head first.

I feel pretty comfortable though. Seem to be some good guys on here, so I think I could find help if needed.

I'll probably need to buy a couple of tools, but I'm the kind of guy that sees paying the dealer the same as renting a house.
So, to me, it will be like investing in my future to buy the stuff I need! That's what I keep telling my wife anyway!

Go for it. Unfortunately, I am not that mechanical, I am ok with small stuff, but would probably end up with parts left over doing any larger job, LOL. Now if it could all be done via computer, that's a different story.

I think the part number on those sealing fasteners is 786a There are 5 of them.

need to buy a couple of tools,
Make sure some of those are decent torque wrenches, inch-lbs and foot-lbs. Mine are 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch drive - Sears make decent ones and of course Snap-On. That's the second thing I bought for my scoot, the first was a service manual.

When you start, stay calm, don't rush and enjoy the experience. When you hit a wall, stepback and come to HDF. Usually someone here will set you straight before a pot a coffee is brewed.
