Default Bike just shuts off

OK, I have had this 03 Standard Glide for a few months and 3000 miles that I have rolled. Three times now the bike has just flat quit running. I thought there was a pattern at first but ran it out in Eastern CO today and had it happen again. I was pulling a slight grade and the bike just flat quit. I did notice the dash showed 0 electrical lights on, on the dash all lights and displays shut off and my riding bud said "No Head lights". I turned the selector switch to "Off", turned it back on, started the bike and rolled for the rest of the day??????????? No problems. WTF?

I had sort of the same problem. Got a 2005 Wide Glide. Less than 5,000 miles. Would be riding along in the cool morning to work and it would shut off. Hit the switch on the handle bar to off then back on and it would start. Did this a total of six times over a couple months. 3 of those times were in the same place on the road! Then it happened a little closer to home. Thought it was the cold weather in the morning cause that is the only time it did it. Then took it in for the 5,000 mile service. Told them about it. No codes of course, they took the handle bar switch apart to check for crimped wires. They said they didn't find any but it has not happened since they took it apart. All I can guess is something was loose and by them taking it apart and putting it back together, it fixed it. Have put a couple thousand on it since, no problems.

I had a similar situation with a 95 eglide. Ended up being a bad switch. When the switch would gout everything lost power. Sometimes it would come right back on other times I would mess with the bike and it would come back on. It finally died on me at Biketoberfest in Daytona. I carried it to theDealer in Daytona and they diagnosed the problem right away. No problems after the switch was replaced.

I am having a problem similar to what's been described here. The bike starts fine and will be running good when it just shuts off, tach needle goes to zero, will coast for maybe 10 to 15 seconds, then start running again. This is starting to happen more frequently. So is this usually the handlebar switch or the key switch? Guess I could try bypassing the switch and see if the problem goes away. What's your thoughts on this? Thanks for any responses.

I guess it pays to look for the easy solutions first. After reading that either the kill switch or the ignition switch is usually at fault in this situation, it hit me. I'd all but forgotten that my bike has two "on" positions on the ignition switch, since I have always just used the first one for these last 18 years. So today I used the second position, and did not have any shut off problem all day. Sometimes the solution is so obvious that it is overlooked! Boy do I feel dumb.

Ignition switch is my guess, bad connection or failing switch.
Cheers

I have the same problem with my '03 Ultra. The dealer did the recall for the main breaker 2 times and this still happens. When my bike goes dead, I pull over and turn off the ignition switch and I have to wait for 10 to 90 seconds before the power comes back. No lights, no power, no anything. I don't think it is the main breaker because my radio does not lose it's memory. Thinking ignition switch or ignition relay uner the seat. My dealer says he cant figure it out and blows me off as crazy because he can not duplicate the problem. It is no fun at night to have all the lights and power go away in Chicago traffic.

I thought that using the second "on" position had fixed the problem, as it ran all day with no shut-offs, but problem was back the next day. Next I bypassed the handlebar kill switch, but that hasn't fixed it either. Mine seems to have the problem more in the first few miles of riding, before it gets good and warm, which seems odd. Once it's warm it dosen't usually shut off, but I can't say it never happens.

I'm thinking ignition module, as I don't know what else it could be, but I don't have a couple hundred dollars to spend, when that may not fix the problem. It's very frustrating!

If you still have a BREAKER not a fuse, replace the terminals that connect to it. I have seen bikes doing what yours is doing, and found that the crimps in the terminals get so hot they trip the breaker.
