I have a 2001 Heritage Classic 18,000 miles. Has always run great. If I start out with a full tank of gas it runs perfect. After I have used 1 to 1 1/2 gallons of gas it starts spitting, sputtering, and backfiring to the point it don't think I can make it to the gas station. Once I fill up, which is never over 2 gallons it runs great again?
Any Suggestions would be appreciated!
EFI correct??? I would bet that you have a hole in the fuel line from pump to out put line. Common problem the , the new line kit is shorter and will not rub a hole through the line.
Yes EFI...I will check the fuel line more closely. Last time I checked it there did not seem to be any holes - but I will check it again. Why would it only run good it was completely full of gas?
The line that is leaking is in the tank. Be careful have 1/2 tank of fuel and remove cap and turn bike on but do not start. If the line is leaking you will hear it , it may spray fuel out of the tank so again becareful( ie dont put you face over fuel filling hole) Reason it runs better is that the fuel has a harder time leaking with liquid covering it.
Maybe the tank isn't venting properly. Pressure builds as gas goes away. Try loosening up the gas cap when it starts running rough to see if it chanes. You've cleaned all fuel line filters?

It's the line in the tank - been there a million times. Blu, the filter is inside the tank connected to the assembly he needs to remove to check the lines. You can verify it by doing a fuel pressure test and when you turn off the power, pressure should hold. if it drops to zero right away, it's verified.
you probably have a hole in the line from your fuel pump to the outlet in the tank (assuming fuel injected model---Aparently very common yet I have not heard of an upgrade to the line itself---My bad luck happened to me twice--A buddy had his crack on the washington belway at speed
