Is it Synthetic or regular dyno oil? Shouldn’t you run regular dyno oil for awhile to break in the engine better than switch to synthetic after she's broke in? If so, how many miles should you run the regular oil?

HD puts regular oil in the crank at the factory. It is OK to switch to synthetic at the 1000 mile service. My opinion, there are better oils than Syn3 HD synthetic like Mobil 1 V-twin or Amsoil.

You don't have to wait to go to synthetic oil. You can have the dealer dump the dino stuff, and put synthetic in before you even take the bike home. The old saw about synthetics not allowing proper break-in is no longer true, if it ever was.

I beg to differ with that. Synthetic oil does not allow proper break in. Most of the 2005s with oil consumption problems come in with synthetic oil in them, and less than 4000 miles on the machine. After 5000 miles it is ok to switch to synthetic oil. It is not necessary to use motorcycle oil. Castrol GTX for petroluem oil, Mobile one for synthetic. I have been a mechanic for 14 years, and done some extensive reserch on this topic. Never use synthetic oil in the primary, you wll have clutch problems Castrol GTX 20w50 is fine here or 10w40. The motorcycle oil craze was started by recourceful executives Brain washing future mechanics at MMI. They knew it would flow downhill and false worries would be had by the uninformed. Amsoil is a good choice if you have the money, if not don't worry use $2.79 a quart Castrol GTX.

Since the SEs are coming with synthetic oil, are they all not getting broken in? Plenty of new vehicles now come with synth and are doing fine. And until recently I've been running 15w-50 synth in my primary. The clutch has about 60,000 miles on it and about 40,000 of that is with synthetic.

Here's something from Quaker State:

Myth #6

Engines have to be “broken in” before using synthetic oil.
I need to break in my engine with non-detergent oil.
If I use regular oil or synthetic oil in a new engine, my engine will take longer to break in.

Fact
It was common years ago for engine manufacturers to recommend non-detergent oils for engine break-in. This was when the pistons used cast-iron “square-faced” rings and the rings needed to wear some to “seat” into the engine. With today’s technology of oils and engine manufacturing, engine manufacturers no longer recommend the use of non-detergent oils for the break-in period. In fact, engines today are factory-filled with high quality API SL performance motor oil, which contains high levels of detergents and dispersant additives.
