Default Fat Bob Turn Signal Relocation Project (I'm Stuck!)

The signals on the Fat Bob are routed through the handlebars.

Following the step-by-step below, and with the service manual by my side, I got all the way up to where I should be extracting the turn signal wires through the mesh housing (#10 in thebestofindica's instructions) ... but here's the problem.

The cable connectors at the tank-end of the turn signal wires appear to be too large to pull up through the frame and then through the bars - and when I tug on the wires from the signal-end, there's no indication of play to encourage me to keep yanking, anyway.

From the signal end, it looks like I'd have to cut the wire and re-splice after extracting both ends from inside the bars. I'm what you might call a little hesitant to do that.

So... either I'm too squeamish, or I don't understand the end-to-end job of rerouting turn signal on internally-wired bars.

Anybody got a clue as to what I should do next?

Okay, so now I need to take the wife to get some Arroz con Pollo. When I get back, please have my problem solved for me.

Thanks.

If you want to do it the "proper" way. You would do the following:

1) remove bolt in front of tank
2) remove seat and bolt under seat holding tank on
3) remove fuel pump fuse, start bike and when it dies, run starter for 3 seconds, disconnect ground cable from battery)
4) remove quick connect fuel line from coupling (push up on coupling then pull line down on fuel line)
5) slide tank back
6) remove grommets from either side of frame neck
7) remove plastic shield under frame at front under neck
8) find connector with turn signal wires
9) remove wires from connectors
10) remove turn signal wires from inside mesh cover that is routed along bars
11) remove turn signals from bars and relocate to new spot
12) plug wires back into connectors, connect ground to battery to make sure everything works
13) put connectors and other wires back into backbone
14) put shield back in place
15) put grommets back in frame neck, and then slide tank back up and put seat on
16) Done!

stago,
Have a look here.

Look for posting # 4.... Wiring... Molex

I think that this may be your issue.

Let me know if I understood your question correctly.

Chicken and rice sounds good right about now,
even though I just finished off an Enchilada plate.

Mud, thanks for the linkage. I think that will help me. I'm working on moving my front signals off the controls to the trees. I'll take another look at the wires to see if your advice applies.

Again, thanks.

Hey stagolee - did you ever figure this out? I've been thinking about doing this myself, but I've never done this with internally wired signals.

Anyone else done this mod on a Fat Bob?

I did the same thing to my Wide Glide. But I did not want to hassle with trying to pull the wires out so I cut the turnsignals off at the control boxes. I then pulled the wires out of the neck and cut the ends off but left the wires in the loom. I bought some replacement turnsignals for about $30 off ebay and installed those instead. You can see my signal placement in my sig pic.

You might be having problems due to the wires being zip tied inside the controls.

I pulled the controls apart, cut the zip tie, and fished them out, put a new zip tie (stress relief) back inside the controls, and reassembled.

easier to cut and splice if you ask me.

Just a thought.

(Step #9) Need to disconnect the wire pins from the plug(s), pull through, and then re-connect

Gee, just one bike left to do this to. Any idea when the fun will stop long enough for us to tackle this again? Nadia?
