Default 88" rear cylinder head oil leak

Hey guys

My 02 Heritage 88 started to show an oil leak. Seems to be coming from the breeze way under the rocker box. No signs of leaking from the head itself or from the outer edges of the rocker box. A small amount of oil seems to be coming from under the center of the rocker box and blowing back onto the head fins and onto the rear exhaust.

At first, I thought it might be the pushrod tubes. Did a cam job about a year ago. The O rings are new from that point and are intact.

My question is...

Is there some point of potential leak from UNDER the rocker box, that would cause this oil leak?

And, If so.... how to fix the leak? Remove the rocker box?

Thanks for the help!

I am no expert, but I don't really see what else it could be other than a leaking rocker box. If the inner part of the gasket is leaking, then it would go down through the center part of the head and come out where you are describing. Sounds like it's time to buy a rocker box gasket set and grab some wrenches and a couple cold ones! Of course replace all the gaskets, upper and lower.

Yup, I think you are correct.

After investigating the way the rocker box attaches to the head.....that seems to be the only answer. The gasket set is $26-$28 bucks. Pull the tank, pull the box and replace the gasket. Should be able to get it done in an afternoon. Thanks for chiming in!

Dealt with this issue a few months ago. Didn't even have to pull the tank, just lifted it.

I was just going to respond the same way and I noticed that BB had already done so. Loosen the front bolt, take off the rear bolt and tilt her upwards. Throw something in-between the tank mount and the frame to hold her up while you work...
