G'day. My name is Andy. I live in Australia. I own a '97 Softail Custom. Unfortunately the cam bearing siezed & now my engine is a great looking paper weight. Because the damage is so extensive, I am trying to buy a crate engine. My local Dealer here went through the Harley catalog & informs me they only have '99 crate engines. I said surely that is a misprint & it should read upto '99? They said they would double check that. That was a week ago. I then decided to do my own research & ended up on an American shop site that also has '99 crate engines. I asked them the same question & they told me if I don't know how to fit a '99 into '97, then I should seek the professional help of my local dealer. Now I am quite capable of doing an engine swap by myself. I just need my question answered.
Is there a difference between '97 & a '99 engines? Seems to me all evolution engines should be the same, including mounting holes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Andy.

 

I don't have an answer for the "only '99" issue, but answer your question, yes a '99 EVO is the same as a '97. Only notable difference I know of would be when they changed from a bottom breather to a head breather system, and that was around '92-'93.
