Default Wheel and tire swap help needed

I recently aquired a 1984 XLS Roadster (pictured below) and I would like to change the look to something in the direction of the newer Sportster 48's. Spoked 16" front and rear. But I would consider any wheels that make life easier for the swap.

Whats the best way short of buying something and making it work to determine what wheels will work and what will be more difficult fabrication and spacers required etc.

I have access to a full machine shop and so I can make stuff but the machine shop is over an hour away from my shop so its not exactly convenient to run back and forth between the two.

I hope this is a realistic question that someone can help with here.

Thanks for the help in advance and very glad to own my very first Harley Davidson.

I got 16x3 2013 48 wheels im looking to sell. im not super sure on what you need, but you would need a wider tree mid glide, and most likely bearings to fit your axles. email me is your interested giantglory805@gmail.com
