Please Help Me Understand – Wheels/Hubs/Bearings/Offset, ect.
My goal from this post is to find the correct parts I’ll need to put a 16” wire wheel on the rear of my FXDB. But, in the process I’d like to understand all the topics I’ve read about wheels that work with certain hubs or have to have a certain bearing, ect. Reading so many threads, the process of trying to understand all the info becomes muddy.
So, are there ‘rules’ to follow? What is or are the most important factor(s) when trying to find the correct wheel for your application. My buddy right now is trying to find a 21” wheel for the front of his ’85 Electra Glide and his having the same problems with trying to figure out what the right parts would be.
So hopefully with this post I’ll learn what the right parts will be to fit a 16” spoke wheel on the rear of the bike
If you are looking for laced spoke wheels you would just call Blackbikewheels and tell them what bike you have and they will build the wheel for you to fit your ride. You can also send them your hub and they will lace the size rim you want on that hub.Cheapest option
Buchannon will also build the wheels that same way for you. Tell them what you want and they will tell you what will fit. I am gonna have blackbike build me a set of wheels. 17x5.5 or 18x5.5 rear so I can use a 200 rear and a 21x3.25 so I can use a 120 front. Price is about 1400.00 from scratch and about 900 if you give them hubs to build from depending on what spokes, nipples, and rim options you select.
Alot of guys try and fit other bike wheels on their own rides and some succeed, but they usually have knowledge of spacing, offsets, shims, machine shop availability. Not worth the headaches for me

Where are you buying the wheel from? Most sellers like J&P Cycles have good tech support for stuff like this. If you are planning to go the ebay route I would communicate with the seller before buying to make sure they will work with you to make sure you get the right setup, saving $50 on ebay may cost you more in the long run if you get it wrong the first time.
Basically tech-wise you gotta look at what you got vs what you want to put on and see what the differences are. IE width, correct spacing to make sure your belt/brake rotor lines up good and straight. also look for clearance at full suspension travel on the tire if you are changing overall tire size,etc....
