Brought the mpg back to normal

Just ran 200+ miles on my '17 RK. I filled the tank to the top and headed out. Mostly Hwy with speeds in the 70 - 80 range most of the time. About half way out stopped and talked with a friend and then returned. Return to same station and refilled from the same pump. First fill was about 4 hours before last fill and in that time they raised the cost of fuel 10 cents a gallon! 42.94 mpg hand calculated

I've got 2100 miles on my SGS and I've been doing the hand calculation thing on most of my fill ups. Been getting 44 mpg +/- 2 pretty consistently.
Like a previous poster said, for a while I've been kinda amazed at the different mpg values people seem to be getting. The more I keep thinking about it though just about anything in the 35 to 55 range is kinda believable to me. There's a lot of variables.

Here are 131 tanks, meticulously hand calculated, for my previous '16 RGS.
46.2 MPG overall.

The M8 is much more efficient than the TC. Plus my riding style, over time, has refined. Note how the trend, over time, is upward:

I got tired of doing all of the hand calculating and since the onboard computer matched my results so closely, I just trust the computer now.
When I ride with others, I never need to stop for gas before they do. And I always put less gas in. Always.
I've gotten more than 300 miles on a tank countless times.
When I do my 1,000 mile rides, I expect to spend $50 on fuel and that is what happens.
YMMV... literally.

bwoltz: When you fill up and the DTE says 300 miles until empty that is telling you that the EMC was at an average of 50 mpg. It can go down or up after filling depending on how it is riden.
The DTE is always calculating based on the average in the EMC. That is the assumption it makes when you fill it and as you ride it constantly adapts to current averages.

Three approximately 150-mile legs of a recent journey I may or may not have taken on a 2017 RGS with definitely-not-aerodynamic soft lowers.
38.4 MPG - 80 MPH avg, ~78 degrees OAT, vents open
35.1 MPG - 88 MPH avg, ~78 degrees OAT, vents open
36.0 MPG - 80 MPH avg, ~52 degrees OAT, lower vents closed
38.4 MPG - 80 MPH avg, ~78 degrees OAT, vents open
35.1 MPG - 88 MPH avg, ~78 degrees OAT, vents open
36.0 MPG - 80 MPH avg, ~52 degrees OAT, lower vents closed

Yesterday got to take the '17 RG out for a little 300 mile ride. Weather was in the upper 70's and each time I came up to a stop the oil cooler fan was on and the engine EITMS came on. Mind you this happen just as I came off the interstate and I had been traveling between 70 - 75 mph for about an hour straight. I used the cruise control to try and keep me from running my normal hwy of 80 +! Traveled down a back road through the mountains that had a speed limit of 55 mph and when you came into a town it dropped 35 - 40 mph. That road was 44 miles long and I travel through three towns along the way. Each and every time I slowed into a town if I missed a traffic light both the EITMS and oil cooler fan were on when I stopped.
So what does this mean, I do not know, but sure glad I added the oil cooler with fan because come summer time and the heat goes back up to its normal 80 - 100 degree IMHO your going to need it from what I saw today.
My route was I-5 north from LA to 99 north to Bakersfield. Turned around in Bakersfield and took 99 back to 5 and got off at Hwy 126 west. That's an old Hwy that runs through the mountains over to the coast. Took Hwy 1 back down the coast to LA. Today the weather is dropping to a high of low 60's with rain coming tonight, glad I was able to sneak in a little winter relief. Got 42.1 mpg this time hand calculated
