I had the dealer put on a HD oil cooler last week. The drive home was in the rain and it did seem like my engine was cooler (maybe just the rain).
Now it seems like it i just as hot. I have the HD oil temp LED dip stick and it shows about 2 to 5 degrees cooler, it has also been a little cooler out side?
How can you tell if the Oil Cooler is doing what its suppose to be doing, again the dealer installed it and I'm not much of a wrench.
Well pauletich, I am about as much a wrench as you are.
Some guys will say they get the 10-20 degree drop, others will say it doesnt work worth the cost involved.
I would give it a couple days or go on a longer ride to see if your temp gauge reflrcts any changes you may have logged before your install.
Or you can go for a long ride and place the back of your hand near the small radiator to see if there is much heat coming from it.
Just some food for thought is all I can suggest.
Rob
The HD oil cooler has a thermostat. When the oil is under a specific temperature (185 degrees F), it does not go through the thermostat and the oil cooler.
You can check if the oil cooler is working by touching it when the engine is getting hot (above 185 degrees). If the oil cooler is hot to the touch, it is working. If the oil cooler is cool, either the oil is not hot enough (so, get the engine hotter) or the thermostat is bad.
I have one on my 05 EG.It seems to help a little compared to different bikes that have oil temp and no cooler. It is alot of extra trouble changing oil, there is more places to leak from.I did not put one on my 05 springer no oil temp either just synthetic oil.No problems and it has been hot as HELL.

I haven't used one since I put one on my '83 Wide Glide. I just use synthetic and check it often in summer. For the '00 Fatboy, I also use Redline 20-60 in the summer.
