Default starter issues.

Hi guys., any ideas. ..
98road king classic. Evo w/fi
I bought a starter/clutch rebuild kit from my local hd dealer and just today pulled out the starter and rebuilt it. I have worked on on my own stuff for years but this one is driving me crazy.
Got it all rebuilt and reinstalled. I left the primary cover off to see the starter engage before i button her up. Well the bolt /jackshaft comes loose and spins right off every time i try to start it. I tightened the bolt and bent the tab back. Gears all seem to line up and i was very careful while rebuilding it. I dont think i put anything together backwards but i might hv..lol.
anyone heard about this happening or have any tips before i pull my hair out and buy a whole new starter...
thx.

You can pull your hair out all you want, you can buy a new starter too, but you will be back here asking the same question, with less hair and less money...

Did you re assemble the jackshaft and couplings according to the factory service manual?

I followed the manual. I also looked online and found a lot of other people having the same issue. They changed the lock washer on the jackbolt and that seemed to fix it. Gonna try it this evening and see if that works. Also going to replace jackbolt, just in case.

There is a coupling in there that can be installed wrong, at a glance it looks the same at each end, but there is a difference.

Make sure the tablock is installed and bent properly.
