Default Starter Help

Hi guys, I have a 92 FLHTC and just put in a ALL ***** starter cluch n reassembled n installed. What kind of clearance is normal for the starter gear n the clutch ring? I didn't note this n don't like what I have now, maybe 1/16"? I can push the coupler n jackshaft In about a1/4" but the spring is holding it out n I'm stumped. It's been apart several times to check things n it's all where it's sposed to be, It works like a charm cept for the springs holdin it out. Any ideas?

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

The starter jackshaft assembles correctly one way. If yours is assembled correctly then thats all the clearance your going to have, wether you "like" it or not.

If your not already done.

Last nite I installed a new ultima 1.4 starter and paid attention to how much clearance I was getting. I also had a hard time getting it to compress to give good clearance, once the bolt from jackshaft was seated and torqued down there was plenty of clearance.
Make sure you have the two couplings pointed in the right direction. Also test fire the starter before putting primary cover back on.

Exactly, do it wrong and it won't disengage.

I just said it in a more democratic way.

I have the coupling with the shoulder facing the correct way n the snap ring in the groove, n the large cplng can go either way, right? I'll have to look at that. wtf.

According to the schematic on hand.........The large coupling with the snap ring in it, installs with the snap ring toward the Pinion Gear.( ie: shallow depth toward gear.)

The long coupling installs with the counterbore toward the Jackshaft.
