Default starter will not come out

So, i get a new starter for my '88, FLHS, and i pull the solinoid, starter bolts, and after pulling the starter out about an inch, maybe less, it will not come any further out... the shaft is stuck, i try rotating it around, and pulling more, but no go.. just stuck in there... I put it all back together because it still starts the bike, just not so well after it gets heated up... am i missing something??

You have to take off the primary cover, and remove the bolt from the end of the jackshaft. It's screwed into the end of the starter shaft and the starter won't come out until that bolt is removed.

Do you have a Genuine H-D Service Manual? If you don't, get one!

That's what I had to do to replace my starter. I don't know when the starter changed to the new style. Are your solenoid and starter together in one bolt-on unit? If they are, you will have to do that. I don't know about the older-style starters... they changed to the new style in the late 80s...

Slow down there buddy. Why are you pulling the solenoid? You don't need to do that to pull a 1988- starter. Just pull the starter. 2 bolts on the primary. 1 support bracket on the front and take the wires off. The starter will pull right off the inner primary. Leave the solenoid right there unless you want to pull it. If you do, then yes you have to open the primary.

+1

And the 84-89 starters are a totally different animal from later models. Do yourself a BIG favor and disregard the Cylmer manual and buy a Factory Service Manual (HD) part number 99483-90 if you're going to do your own work.

the solinoid is separate, I took it off to get more room to work -
My starter is an after market one that has the starter gear/clutch in the same unit, like an ultima starter.. Looking at the new starter which is near exact, it's an Ultima ThunderFire, I really dont see how the jackshaft can bot on to the starter, seems like there are splines that fit to the starter-
HD Service Manual... For Sure... the Clymer, or whatever it is, isn't very accurate. It covers way too many years and i have found more tham a few typos... makes it a bit difficult to trust

Yeah - there is no substitute for a Genuine H-D Service Manual for the specific year and model of your bike. I have a Clymer manual for all of the Evo touring bikes and FXRs as well - they are good because they have a lot more illustrations and pictures than the H-D manuals... but I have the '95-'96 FLT H-D manual.

today i rode about ten miles, stopped at my folks house... went to go about ten minuts later, and my starter stayed engaged and would not disengage. Since the first time this happened, I swapped out the solinoid, relay, tested my cables and went over my contacts, new battery... and it didn't do it again, so, with the revelation of my starter being stcuk into my jackshaft, could it be possible that my jackshaft is/was the real problem here? Also, does anyone know a good source to purchase a factory HD manuel, as far as the best price is concerned... - Thanks

Watch ebay or classified here for the service manual if you can afford to wait. Newer ones are more plentiful. I've got a 97 and there weren't any for sale. I've got a weird obsession with manuals so I couldn't wait and went to the dealer and ordered the service manual $60. I ordered the owners and parts manual as well.
