Default 1970 Electra Glide Tillotson H2D2 question

I know already, I have been told many times to throw this carb in the trash.. The Bike is 46 years old and it sat for 25 years, I got it running with the orig carb, and help from Johnjz. My question is why am I getting around 12 miles to the gallon with this setup. The bike is 100 % stock. I have put around 100 miles on it, requiring 2 tanks of gas. I thought I read somewhere these carbs would get 40 something miles to the gallon ? I think it is running rich.. but I can't imagine having the carb settings that far off and it stay running fairly well.. Thanks for any help. I will prob go to bendix over the winter.. unless this problem can be remedied. It starts very easy and will idle desent too (for a tillotson) Thanks in advance for your help, you guys are great.

While I can't answer your question directly ... 12 mph is ridiculous. My Shovel ( S&S Super E ) does ( usually ) around 38 mph.

While I don't have any personal experience with a Tillotson (even though I have 3 of them in my Shovel stash) there is something definitely wrong with that kind of mileage. Have you checked your plugs? I have a CV on my '68 and a Bendix on my '69 and they both get better than 35 mpg.

the gas tank it is leaking - usually behind the rear of the dash at the stud it runs down the frames rear down tube and onto the road

look for a clean path - petcock - front crossover line - line to carb - the carb its self is all suspect to fuel loss -- at 12 to a gallon it would have fouled the plugs in the first 2 quarts of gas

finding a bendix that is not used up is the issue - at a swap meet you can look for wear Flea bay $ucm sell them as almost new well you get that - 40mm new is pricey around 300 i think dont remenber
