Default Fuel Question

I recently got an 04 road king. It is basically stock except slip ons and air filter change.
It is a carb model.
I have only put about 300 miles on it and noticed that it is only getting about 27 mpg. My wide glide with a bunch on engine mods is getting in the 45 range.

This doesnt seem right, any suggestions before I start just blindly slinging money at it?
All help will be greatly appreciated!

BTW I have done nothing, no plug change etc. My riding buddies say it is not smoking. Thats about all I know.

I would check the jets in carb probably needs to be rejected. How many miles on it?

The bike has 23,000 miles on it.
I did notice that It does idle high after it warms up.
Like I said, I only have about 300 miles of seat time on this bike...

First thing I would do is look at the plugs. If they are full of black soot(spelling?)this is an indication the carb is to rich.If this is the case remove the carb and see what jets are in it and take note of the needle position.
Since the mufflers and AC have been changed, maybe the PO did some carb work to it and set it up too rich.

Default RE: Fuel Question

Since I just got it, I really don't have any previous knowledge. I got the usual bs from the dealer about how this thing was always serviced, well taken care of... etc.
I know that fi units get better fuel mileage, but I would like to ride a little further before I had to stop for gas.
