Default grip change

heybrothers and sisters,
when changing out grips,do you just slice off the factory ones with a razor knife like in the old days or is there more to it?

on the throttle side you just open up the housing, disconnect the cables(dont lose the little brass ferrules)and slide the grip off. on the clutch side you will have to cut it.

Step away from the razor knife!! On the newer Hogs there is no need for cutting. I have changed grips 4 times now and have never had to cut a single one. The left hand grip is secured inside the switch housing. There may be a slight amount of grip adhesive, but it will come loose with a little twisting.

I changed the grips on my '07 Fat Boy...but just couldn't quite break the bond on the left side...had to slit the grip to remove it. I removed the remaining glue with some Goo-Gone cleaner.

As far as the right side goes...listen to mke125125...DON'T let the little brass units get away from you! Chances are...the dealer will not have them in stock. And please, do not ask me how I know that!

Good luck...

Steve

I changed mine a few weeks ago on 2005 Fatboy. I used a very thin screw driver and slide in a few times, twisted and they came off....If you don't need the grips, you could just slice and dice....

Different than the old days, most of the new grips(HD Customs anyway) don't need glue, they hold by the switch housings..

Good luck

undo the housings
spray WD-40 in the left grip
twist the left grip to break the adhesive

I used the coat hanger and air compressor tip that I read on this forum to get the left grip off, worked like a charm.

I used a bucher knife and left the housing on so the rubber seal stayed there to keep the water out.
