Am I wining it out?
I also wear a full face helmet on my 96 twin FLHTC and i cruise at right around 3k RPM. My shift point is right before i hit 4k. Its all about listening to it and feeling the power band though. Everyone rides a little different. If you can feel yourself sitting on the power band then you should be fine. If you're used to sport bikes, which ride at a much higher RPM, you might be pinning it a little close to the red line. What year did you say it was?

Most people that I hear shift do it well before they should. A lot of the guys that I have ridden with in groups tend to lug the bike. Like Wannaryd stated about 4g's is a good point to shift and cruise around 3 grand.
