Default Royal Purple

MY ad blocker stops just about everything that comes along but here, on HD forums, a Royal Pruple broke through and I thought I would take a gander at what they had to say.

I clicked on a couple of their videos, from those auto shows that are actually just thirty minute ads for their sponsors, and watched them dyno test one street engine and one four wheel drive truck using regualr oil and then draining and refilling with Royal Purple.

Both actually showed an increase in torque and horsepower.

Has anyone used this stuff and if so, can you tell a difference?

I think pretty much all synthetics make the same claim in some way or another. Less friction, free flowing, etc would allmean less drag on an engine, hence more power.

I have a dyno run sheet on a Harley that shows almost 2 horsepower increase using AMSOIL 20/50. All quality synthetics will give you some increase in horsepower as MNPG stated previously.

That assumes your current lube isn't slicker than Bill Clinton trying to define, "IS"!

LOL, depends on what it replaces, I would think. Bigger gain over say, straight 50 wt. dino than a 10/40 diesel like Rotella. I think I have seen some friction reduction and HP increase claims for rotella too.

Hey Sniper I had been running Amsoil for 25,000 miles in this bike. Doing a late night oil change before leaving for S. Dakota The only parts store open had two quarts Amsoil. But they had Royal Purple, soI bought that. Holy chit was it noisy!! Motor sounded like it was tearing itself apart inside. A lot noisier than Amsoil. Maybe thats a sign of a superior oil but it bothered me.

Thanks to all of you. I just thought I'd ask.

The good fellas down at my local dealership are taking good care of me and keeping the synthetic in all the boxes....

I just wacthed those videos and wondered if anyone had used the stuff because even when I watch those shows on TV I get disgusted with them because they really aren't about anything other than selling their crap to someone that doesn't know any better.

As noisey as my engine is already , I don't need any more worries.

I used the "car" variant (20w50) in my old RK Evo and it's still running at 110k. Heads have never been removed, consumes no more oil than when new (1 qt per 5k miles), had 160/160 psi compression at last yearly test (2006, same as the first in 1997), and runs perfect. Yes, it clicks and rattles with its EV13 cam, but it always did. RP is an excellent product, but there are other excellent products on the market. Choose from the usual suspects (RP, M1, Redline, Amsoil, etc.) based on price and availability. Or, select one if you think it is better. It might be, or might not--or vice versa for the next guy. Who knows.]

If you decide on RP, run the 20w50 "car oil" in the engine, 75w90 in the tranny (or 85w140 if a 6-speed without IDS), but I would use something much less high-tech in the primary. I use a generic 10w40 fossil engine oil from Wal-Mart at $1.24/qt.

+1 here on Royal Purple. I do not think that there is really a "bad" synthetic oil coming form any of the major manufacturers but I have a source for RP so that's what I use. I've been very satisfied. I owuld use just about any synthetic oil over Syn3. And would use Syn3 over fossil oil.

+1 on Synthetic Gear oil. Not too picky about brand but look for GL5.

I think olive oil would owrk in the primary but use HD Forumla+ just so the MoCo can get me on something!

I think what people use is somewhat related to how easy a product is to get. It depends where your at. Here in new jersey I have a hard time finding mobil 1 v twin for less then $15 a qt. I aint payin that for oil. and the otherpopular brands of oil can be found ,but you have to hunt for them.,,,
