I've got a 2001 heritage FLSTC with 9500 miles on it. I have no problems cold starting it, however after riding for awhile if i stop and and shut her down for a short period it is very difficult to restart. I have to crank for a long time before it will kick over...Any ideas?
If you have the race tuner, check your cranking fuel table in the higher temperature areas. You may need to increase the fuel pulse.
Engines that don't crank over right away are almost always a sign of not enough fuel. If you have a carb, \\;try twisting the throttle a few times to squirt some fuel in there.
If that doesn't completely cure this, another thing to check with SERT is the spark timing. I learned this the hard way. When you push the stat button the motor is below 750 RPM (of course) and about 50- and above MAP, probably 70 or so. Check your spark timing in these areas. Should be 5 degree or below to \\;\\\\\\;wind up \\;\\\\\\;the motor good without the timing making the engine fight itself. My timing in these areas (50-100 MAP) is 0-1 degree and at the 1000 RPM also. Easy start.
Since the engine is once started running 1000 RPM and about 30 MAP all that (50-0 MAP) that spark advance stays where you want it. Mine is in the 18-20 timing in these areas.
