I am currently enrolled in the riders course at the end of the month. \\; I am a newbie in all aspects of riding. \\; I am looking to purchase a Harley as my first bike and I have two bikes that are in great shape that I am looking at. \\; There is a 96 883 in good shape for just under 4k and \\;a 01 Nighttrain in good shape for just \\;under 10k. \\; I am not a small guy so I am not too sure about the 883. \\; My concern is that the 883 is just going to be too small for me to ride let alone learn on.
 \\;
I am 5'10" and approx 240lbs.
 \\;
Am I crazy for looking at a softtail as my first bike? \\; \\;I am just not into the whole metric thing...if I am going to get a bike it is going to be a Harley., that much I am sure of. \\;
 \\;
Any and all advice would be appreciated.
 \\;
Thank you for your help on this. \\; I do have about a month before I by.
The night train sounds better! Why not rent one for a weekend then decide, Most people take a bath on8823 after using it for a few months and decide to upgrade! Good luck! Welcome to the forum from Motown!
Thank you for the response. \\; The bath is what I am afraid of. \\; I'm in North Jersey so the roads are more primed for cruising...makes sense to me, just concerned that I would be getting too much for a starting bike, although I am in love with the Train!!!
Greetings,
 \\;
This one is a no-brainer: Buy the Night Train. You'll be saving money in the long run by just buying that now instead of getting the Sportster then something bigger.
Night Train for sure. Ya the 883 would be easier to learn on but you would out grow it in a month.
No your not crazy for going after a softail as your first bike. They are great rides and you can do so much more with it then with the 883 at your size.
Not to mention the crap you will get from the guys for riding the 883
Welcome and good luck let us know what you get!!!!!
