I have an '03 FLHRCI. Just recently began getting a bottom end klunking noise when I shut the scooter off. Sounds like heavy metal, almost like a rod knock. Bike is quiet while it's running. The only other simptom that's new is there seems to be some slop in the drive train as I get on and off the throtle. Like a loose chain on the older bikes. I haven't pulled anything apart yet, but I was thinking of opening the primary and starting to poke around to see if anything was loose.
I've never worked on a TC. If anybody has seen this before any clues would be greatly appreciated. I might end up with this thing all over the garage floor and totally miss whats happening. LOL
Thanks. I was looking in the service manual and that looked suspect to me as well. Guess I'll just get in there and find out. BTW, it has gotten progressively worse. The first few times I heard the noise when I shut it down I thought it was my imagination. No doubt now. Guess where I'll be Saturday morining.
Well the verdict is in. The compensator nut backed off. It got really ugly in there. The inside teeth gone on teh cam and the alternator extension shaft not looking too good either.
A lesson learned. I should have been suspect much sooner than I was. I had looked in the manual and the torque value for the nut is 150 - 165 ft. lbs. Basically King Kong with a ten foot pipe on the end of the wrench. Who'd ever guess the damn thing would back off. I have an extended warraty so I slipped it back together and took it into the dealer. They told me this is a a fairly common problem.
The bottom line is if you here any noise form the bottom end when you shut your scooter down get in there quick before you end up buting a bunch of parts. It's a fair amount of work but nothing earth shattering. But.... I'd rather be installing a piece of chrome or even better ... Riding than tearing the bike apart. And it's a dynamite weekend. The sun is shining and it's 65 degrees.
Oh well... There's always next weekend. Guess I'll just have to go on a trip!
