Mobil 1 V Twin....   I keep hearing about how expensive it is and hard to find but I find it at AutoZone AutoParts pretty easy and the price is around $8.89 per quart.

Great Topic / Lot's of interesting input!!!

I've been using Castrol MC lubricants for a long time now....

in H-D machines approved for Syn 3 throughout the powertrain, I run Castrol V-TWIN SAE 20W-50 throughout....

some seasons I ride more than others, so my PM differs:
engine oil w/filter every 2500K or twice per yr
trans & primary every 5000K or every other yr

I buy online buy the case....it's cheaper

Hey everyone, Great Forum! Tons of great information, lots experience and opinions…

You’ve convinced me to switch to synthetic lubricants. And wouldn’t you know it, as I searched around these small towns here up here in the southeast corner of Washington State, no one had Mobil 1 V-Twin oil or Redline shock proof heavy in stock! Then these dirty rotten little ######’s wanted an arm and a leg (too much money) to order in some.

But wait, I noticed that the local NAPA parts store had stocked AMSOIL products (because of the great number of Farmers in this area). What the heck, I thought, I might as well try this brand synthetic lubricants. I’ve read the propaganda on the AMSOIL web site before… ya know they say their synthetic oil is better than everyone else’s, and it all but makes you walk on water…. Yea, Yea, What ever…

So in following your suggestions I purchased some AMSOIL V-Twin 20W-50 motorcycle oil, as well as AMSOIL Server Gear 75W- 90 Extreme Pressure lube.

And Damm, you guys are right! These synthetic oils did just what you said they would do! Not only does my Road King Classic (engine) run quieter and cooler, but she (its transmission) shifts quieter and easier!

Three of my friends noticed the difference and now they also switched from HD Syn 3 to the AMSOIL synthetic oils. (Yes, I let them ride my bike. And No, I wouldn’t let them ride my Ol’ Lady. Even though some think it’s a trade off.)

Seriously Gentlemen, whether its AMSOIL or Mobil 1 or Redline or Royal Purple or what ever synthetic lubricants you prefer, just do it! Make the switch! For you won’t regret it.

Signed: Glad to have found this Forum and to have switched to true synthetic lubricants,

Respectfully Cptn.Murff

I'm brand new to the world of HD and need all of the advice I can get.  I bought a used '02 EG Classic in Nov 07 with only 10K miles.  I now want to change all of the fluids but was amiss on what to use.  This forum has helped me make that decision....I'm going Mobil 1 across the board.  I have yet to change any fluids and I'm still trying to find all of the drain holes, but I'm sure I will.  Thanks to all of y'all for a great forum, I know I'll be back many, many more times.

From my tech guys downunder we have been told it (Syn3) was made by Sunoco - we don't get the product range here in Australia but I know a little bit about the brand from viewing that Fountain of Factual Information - American Chopper!!

If it works I sure don't care how it's marketed. I'd buy it even if they promised it would grow hair and Michael Jackson was the spokesman.

Well today I did the switch to Amsoil in all 3 holes, 20W50 in crank and primarry and sever gear 75W90 in the tranny. did a few miles after the change, bike does sound quiter, 3rd and 4th gear whine is much much less. Nuteral is easy to fine and no slipping. I like it enough I am going to sign up as a dealer since the nearest one is 40 miles away. Had seen the comment about friction modifiers on the forum. found this on the Amsoil web site before putting it in my primmary.

"Provides Excellent Wet Clutch Performance
AMSOIL MCV contains no friction modifiers and promotes smooth shifting and positive clutch engagement. AMSOIL MCV controls heat and prevents slippage and glazing, and its high TBN resists acids that can degrade clutch material, helping improve clutch life."

i have a question. i just bought my heritage with 8.000 miles, i had all the fluids changed, i asked the service rep what a better oil was for driving around in town stop and go. reg or syn? he said when the syn gets hot it will make more noise than the regular oil, this made sense to me since i run syn in my fairlane and have noticed about 10 psi difference in pressure than with reg castrol 20/50. maybe it is different with motorcycle oil? so i thought less oil pressure more noise and possible wear? so i went with hd 20/50 figured he would know? thanks, mike

was using dino 20w50 in my bike before switching to Amsoil 20w50 I have noticed a slight increase in my oil pressure with the Amsoil. That was one thing I was going to watch for after the switch. Also the whine I had in 3rd and 4th is a lot better after 500 miles on Amsoil sever gear.

I RUN AMSOIL IN MY '07 STREETGLIDE. IT SEEMS TO RUN HOTTER(245F)THAN THE HARLEY 20-50, BUT STAYS CLEANER LONGER.  I WILL BE CHANGING OIL FILTERS EVERY 2500MILES FROM NOW ON AND SEE WHAT IMPROVEMENT THIS MAKES. I WANT TO ADD AN OIL COOLER BECAUSE ALL AIR COOLED MOTORS SHOULD HAVE ONE(OIL IS THE LIFE BLOOD OF AN ENGINE), SO ANY RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. I READ THAT THE HD PREMIUM OIL COOLER IS NOT AS GOOD AS OTHER AFTERMARKET MODELS. EXPERIENCED USERS ANYONE?

I was using Mobil 1 4 cycle, then changed over to Lucas full synthetic 20/50... the top end quieted a little, oil temp generally went down, and fuel economy may have gotten some better.

The Harley oil cooler is a good one, but for the same money you can get a Jagg 10-row & get 40% more cooling than Harley's 6-row.

I've got such a headache from reading ALL of the posts on this subject.  When my bike was new, the dealership said that they set all bikes up with syn. in primary/trans. and 360 in engine.  Just had the 1100 mile service and said do the same proceedure.  Now, the bike's tranny is more "clunky" than ever before, and I notice just a bit of upper-end engine noise.  I'm thinking that originally there was Formula + downstairs.  That's it, I'm going out and getting Mobile 1 and some 75-90 Mobile ! and installing it on the next nice day.  (Milage is now at 1650).  Screw Citgo and the horse he rode in on.

Hi Jim,

I am a new guy to the forum.  Great information on the oil. Thank you.  I was wondering what kind of oil filter are you using.  Any information would be great.  Thanks again for the great information.

Sincerely, Pat

I just switched from HD  360 to Mobile 1 V-Twin 20-50 for the spring service. So far so good but I haven't been able to put many miles on yet. Damn weather!!
On another note, I noticed that on the Mobile jug they say it is "specifically designed for air-cooled engines, transmissions, and wet clutch primaries". Interesting. I think I'll stick with Mobile One 75-90 in the tranny for now.

for those running Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50: I just found a local parts store that stocks it. Our local Autozone keeps it on the shelf for $8.89/quart. I thought it was a great deal.

Sometime ago, I read a comment from an individual that was concerned regarding switching his oil for fear of voiding his warranty. Not true.  As long as you utilize an oil within spec or better,m your warranty cannot be infringed upon.  For information oin this look up The " Magnuson Act".

Does it really make a difference what brand? All synthetic should be the same.

Amsoil only !!! 20w50 in the engine & primary 75w90 in the tranny

I had over 70k on my oem stock engine when I went to upgrade to a 95" kit when I took my cylinders off to have them bored out, The Master engine builder at HD said they showed very little wear, In addition my cam chain tensioners , you all know the ones that wear out @ 20-30k well mine were in acceptable condition @ 70k with only moderate wear on them. So I am a true believer in Amsoil , been using it sine around 10k on the bike & plan to keep using it.

After all it is the first Syn Oil ever produced for the automotive market 35 years strong !!!

Yes you are correct oil is the life blood of your engine , how ever an oil cooler will only help if there is air running across it, in my experience people who use oil coolers, don't see much difference, also keep in mind you oil needs to be kept at a certain temp in order to vaporize any moisture in the oil, In addition pure Syn oil can easily handle temps above 300 deg f, although your bike should never reach that temp, 245 is a fine temp, my bike usually runs around 230 deg.
So unless you live in a place where the average temp is above 100 deg every day I would not recommend installing an oil cooler , I t only adds points for oil leaks & other issues .

...an oil cooler will only help if there is air running across it...

Reach down and grab hold of an oil cooler on a Harley on a hot summer day while sitting in traffic.  You will get a fairly significant burn.
That is because the oil cooler is removing heat from the oil and transferring it to the cooler surroundings.  As long as the ambient air around the cooler is a lower temp than the surface of the oil cooler itself, heat will transfer.

While you would be correct in saying an oil cooler works best when air is flowing across it, to say that it will only help if air is running across it is wrong.

Not only does an oil cooler radiate heat while stationary, the oil also cools much faster once you start moving with a cooler than without.
