Why Can’t Harley-Davidson Build the LiveWire?

Harley-Davidson Project LiveWire (2)

A few weeks ago, Harley-Davidson announced that the company just couldn’t figure out the financials for bringing to market the absolutely brilliant Harley LiveWire concept bike. Even though the public was “electrified” by the prospect of an all electric Harley, the company stated that the bike would be entirely out of the range of their core demographic.

Now, when I heard this news, I immediately thought this was a lie. There are plenty of other electric motorcycle manufacturers out there that do it for less than the $50,000 Harley-Davidson stated it would cost to build the LiveWire. I figured they were just hesitant to build the bike in case it upset its core audience. While Harley will never actually come out and state that publicly, to prove electric bikes can be made cheaper, Zero Motorcycles just announced that they would reduce the retail price of all of its bikes.

Zero has stated that the new price is a $1,350 drop across its entire lineup, which now even the most expensive motorcycle they build only tops out at a meager $15,995. That motorcycle also has a combined cycle of 125 miles per charge, so again, how can’t Harley-Davidson build the LiveWire?

What do you all think of this? Do you think Harley is just a bit nervous about bringing out the LiveWire, or do you think they really can’t figure out how to build it for less than $50,000? Let us know in the comments below.
