Harley Davidson Exhausts Guide

softail_3.jpgWhat makes Harley-Davidson motorcycles unique? Some say the look of the machine. Others say the mystique. Still others say it’s the history of this special American manufacturer. All, however, can probably agree on one attribute above all others – the sound. Many have attempted to describe the sound of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle (some say it sounds like, “potato, potato,” – not sure how many would agree with this!), and there have been many attempts by other motorcycle makers to duplicate and copy this sound. Anyway, if you haven’t heard a Harley or ridden one, then you are certainly missing a unique experience.

And what makes the sound unique? Some say the exhaust, some say the cast iron cylinder heads, others say the whole engine and exhaust taken together. Whatever creates this sound, as a Harley owner and enthusiast, you have to have it, keep it, and improve upon it, if possible.

That’s why we’ve provided this list of brands and manufacturers of Harley-Davidson exhausts. It will give you some basic information about who and what to look for when shopping.

Vance and Hines have been manufacturing motorcycle exhausts for 30 years. Operating out of Santa Fe Springs, California, they offer 2 into 1 and 2 into 2 exhausts for the Harley V-Twins with names like American Iron Horse, Big Dog, Dresser Duals and the like. Check them out at www.VanceandHines.com/.

Bub is another supplier and manufacturer of Harley-Davidson exhausts. Founded in 1976 by Dennis “Bub” Manning and originally making exhausts for European motorcycles like Norton and Triumph, the company soon expanded to accommodate Harleys. Bub at www.bub.com makes 2 into 1, slip-on, “true dual,” and 2 into 2 exhausts.

The American Custom Tone-Flex design allows the rider to change the sound even while on the road – quickly and easily. Their slip-ons have names like Bomber, and Bullet. Check them out at www.AmericanCustom.com/.

Samson at www.SamsonUSA.com operates out of Brea, California, U.S.A. They do not provide any information about their company (other than contact info), but Samson has just introduced a new “Decibel Killer” exhaust that scavenges exhaust gases for improved fuel economy and power without losing the famous Harley sound.

Founded in 1972 when the owner could not find an exhaust pipe for his racing motorcycle (he eventually built his own), D and D Exhaust at www.danddexhaust.com in Fort Worth, Texas, U.S.A. offers the 2 into 1 Bobcat for Sportster, and Fat Cat and Bosszilla for touring bikes.

Cobra Exhaust (www.CobraUSA.com) is located in Yorba Linda, California, U.S.A. and has been making exhaust systems for almost 30 years. The company manufactures all their products in the United States and they feature exhaust systems for all Harley-Davidson V-twin models.

With so many options available, there’s certainly something for everyone when looking for exhausts for your Harley Davidson.
