Harley Fest Cancelled, then Revived
Major Harley-Davidson festival rescued when enthusiasts step in to save it.
For years, Harley-Davidson in the City had drawn huge crowds to the town of Brechin in Angus, Scotland. That’s why the decision by community group Bravo Brechin to pull the plug on the town’s annual Harley-Davidson festival proved so puzzling. But now U.K. news source The Courier is reporting that the event is back on again. Not because of the community group, but courtesy of a group of supporters.
The enthusiasts stepped in after Bravo Brechin cited “organizational pressures and the absence of official Harley-Davidson approval” as reasons for cancelling the event. A spokesperson for the event told the Courier that those reasons simply aren’t good enough.
“Bravo Brechin’s decision to cancel the 2017 Harley-Davidson in the City event has been met with general dismay, and the reasons stated have caused some angst. A number of those who have been involved in the organizing and running of the event over the years felt there were options which could still be explored to try and run the event.”
The new group of event organizers see the festival as an important economic driver for the community of Brechin. Last year’s event drew 8,000 people and 500 motorcycles on Saturday alone. Obviously, that had a significant economic impact on the local economy. And thanks to a group of Harley enthusiasts who refused to accept no for an answer, the event will live on for at least another year.
The 2017 Harley-Davidson in the City festival takes place on July 15 and 16.
