Helmet Laws: What is the Answer?

Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve brought you stories that highlight what seems to be increasing government initiative to push required helmet laws on motorcyclists. Unsurprisingly, many of us are against such laws as they infringe on our freedoms to ride and treat our bodies as we see fit. Regardless, no one can deny that if you’re involved in a collision your odds of surviving are far higher if you’re wearing a bucket than if you’re not.

But as cold as it may seem, the heart of this issue is a purely economic one. We’re all adults here and we all know that Uncle Sam doesn’t really care if you live or die, simply how you affect the economy– are you a drain or do you keep money coming into the coffers? And so passing a federal helmet law is a way of decreasing the amount that you cost municipal governments (in the form of hospital expenses) should you go down, as most health insurance policies don’t cover motorcycle accidents. And, freedoms aside, it’s a legitimate concern– I certainly don’t want my taxes buying Jello for your vegetative ass.

Let us know your opinion, below…

What steps should the government take with regard to helmet laws?

  • None. Let Darwinism sort it out: if I go down and don't have money/health insurance let me rot where I went down. (38%, 35 Votes)
  • Enact federal, country-wide helmet laws. Seat belts are mandatory in cars, why not helmets on motorcycles? (26%, 24 Votes)
  • None. It's a state's rights issue (I'm a constitutional attorney) (18%, 17 Votes)
  • Leave everything as it is now. (18%, 17 Votes)
