Think the Harley-Davidson FXR Is Irrelevant? Jam City Cycles Says ‘Think Again.’
Jam City Cycles’ custom Harley-Davidson FXR motorcycles tell a story of building to the beat of your own drum.
Jam City Cycles knows Harley-Davidson accessories. Saddlebags, seats, suspension, handlebar accoutrements. Yep, they’ve got it for new Softails, baggers, and Sportsters. But that doesn’t mean the Los Angeles sticks to the new stuff. In fact, Jose Cornejo has a penchant for Harley-Davidson FXRs, and his builds back that up.
Teaming up with close friend and riding buddy Ramon Gonzalez, Cornejo built unique and attention-grabbing Harley-Davidson FXR builds. But Cornejo didn’t want this FXR to conform to what everyone else was doing. “Everyone was doing the black look,” Cornejo told Hot Bike Magazine. “I wanted to go against the grain and do all chrome.” Quite the difference from blacked-out bikes, indeed.
A look at Cornejo’s green machine confirms that much. The Southern California bike builder endowed the classic FXR with verdant paintwork, matching hard bags, and old-school parts. Of note, the FXR features ball-milled componentry from legendary custom motorcycle brand Arlen Ness and Pro 1, as well as an S&S big twin.
FXR- Forged Friendship
Gonzalez and Cornejo’s friendship is one of two wheels. So naturally, the two joined forces to build Gonzalez a custom Harley-Davidson FXR of his own. But, unlike Cornejo’s chrome love letter to classic FXRs, Gonzalez’s bike focused more on the modern function of things.
The second FXR rides on a hiked-up rear end, giving it that much more clearance for canyon-carving. The whole thing wraps around a big S&S twin and a slash-cut 2-1 exhaust system. And Gonzalez says he derived as much fulfillment from putting it together as he did from building it. “Even through the frustrating days, it was all worth it,” he told interviewers. “That’s what pushes me to build another one.”
And build other bikes they will. Currently, Gonzalez is putting the finishing touches on a 2019 Harley-Davidson FXLR Low Rider. Cornejo, of course, continues to put his time into FXRs. According to Hot Bike, he’s planning a fire-breathing, chromed-out FXRT as Jam City Cycle’s next big bike reveal.
