You're definitely doing it the smart way if ya ask me. I also want mine to be bulletproof and not just a hack job. (I tried that.... didn't work) So far, you're the ONLY person I have found with verifiable proof that this can work! Everyone else that has "supposedly" done this has failed (as far as I know) to post any proof or any helpful how-to threads. So, a big THANK YOU!
we are all learning together. the folks popping up in this thread have lead me to this point. "i" couldn't have done it without them.
well, according to all this bravado, just splice 3 wires and all other issues magically disappear. lol.... just takes five minutes and a sam adams octoberfest
Well, to be fair to fxdx1985, I also had a tach on my DWG and it truly was three wires. Very simple. Riser clamp bracket, tach, three wires under the console, done. Took less than an hour.
You're doing quite a bit more than just adding a tach.

Same thoughts here. I did a tank swap when I added the dual gauges and it wasn't this complicated. Mine is an 07 so maybe that has something to do with it.
Thank you sir. Not trying to step on toes and I'm sorry if I offended anyone...maybe I truly don't know what I'm talking about. I don't have a brand new bike, so maybe things really changed.
In my head, the mid 00's Dynas had a speedo only. I added a tach and move both gauges to the bars.
The FXDL already has a tach so in my head that's one less step, just need to move everything to the bars. Clearly the wiring and dash are more of a hassle.
it was the arrogance, not the message. he rolled in saying just do x and y, paraphrase: "why are you taking so long". even though the reasons for the delays a clearly spelled out. not his bike. he can beat his chest, climb the empire state building, swat planes. will not change that fact it's not his bike and i'm doing my own thing.
technically it's 4 wires, lol.
but, yes. that's half the story. does not address:
the console/dash
ignition switch
idiot lights that move into the tach and leave another hole in the dash
horn
mounting
bar clamps that don't fit the oval stck risers
the inability to find 8"+ 1-1/4.... foundrecently: (http://www.scootworks.com/shop.cgi/p...D=PUT_SID_HERE)
etc...
i'm not burning the boats for something like this, i don't want an unclean look. i'm not going to compromise on that, because i don't have to and i'm the person has to look at it all day. i've also mentioned several times, this is not a priority and i'm working on my sportster right now.
all contemporaneous with this gauge stuff. among other things .....

I have been reading this thread and it inspired me to relocate my gauges. I had the two gauges mounted in the dash on my lowrider. I also had the power vision tuner mounted on the bars which I didn't like very much.
I wanted a really clean look but figured just slapping a cover plate on the dash would be cheesy and then the dash would serve no purpose.
I also looked at the gauges and mounting options from Harley and thought it looked to wide, so I built my own gauge pods and mount for the T Bars .
cut everything out on the water jet , the mount in the pic is just a template as I am going a lot thicker and will cut that piece out tomorrow.
I will post pics when I get parts back from
powder coat and mounted and wired .
