The Softails are "oil cooled." I suppose you could call that "liquid cooled" because technically oil is a "liquid." The touring bikes with lowers are oil cooled with additional "water" cooled heads (the radiators are in the fairing lowers).
An issue with four valve heads is the inherent "hot spot" in the section between the two exhaust vlaves. Liquid cooling (oil or water) is needed to cool this area.
Here you can see a single cooling passage drilled in the heads that passes between the valves.

Uncle G...thank you for clarifying that one. You would have gotten a laugh, someone in the group saying all M8's were water cooled. I knew oil cooled and doubted water cooled softails.

Had to add to my comment. Conversation started out M8 was liquid/water cooled. Nope, thats an oil cooler. This guy walked around the scoot looking for a radiator cap to prove me wrong.
It bewildered me how serious he was about that M8 being water cooled. I had to ask just what he was on about, it threw me.
Guess the liquid cool emphasis on the M8 has thrown quite a few folks.
