A discussion came up at work today. Why HD riders talk in chassis codes, and, is it necessary?
I see threads titled in both ways. If a thread is titled in just the chassis code, do people looking on the forums understand this? Are they meant to learn this? Or is it just making it difficult for anyone not in the HD world?
When you are talking about a Harley with anyone other than a Harley rider, they wouldn't understand what you are saying anyway.
When you shop for parts for your bike, do you shop by chassis code, or by year/make/model? Do you think its necessary to designate the models by codes anymore or is it antiquated?

It's easier for me to understand terms like Low Rider or Heritage since I don't have the whole Harley alphabet for each model memorized. I don't expect anybody else to understand all the codes ether so I try to post with the model name or code and name.

So you're saying its necessary to keep using them.
Absolutely. Let's say I am talking to a no brain parts kid (not an experienced intellignet type parts guy). I say to him what I want. All this kid can do is read what is in front of him. I better give him the correct model code or who knows what I'll get.
Like I said, it depends on who you are talking to.

Whenever I come across someone using those model codes, I have to Google the code to know which model it is. I've got a lot of the more modern models down, but for many of the older model codes, I have to look them up.

Like I said, it depends on who you are talking to.
In the example you posted I would already have the correct part number for the parts guy. So no need to tell him my model code.
