Default FXBB oil level

Hey guys!

so I’m pretty new to riding and HD. Bought my ‘19 fxbb with about 3700+ miles last November and put about 700 since.
I remember checking the oil level when I picked it up from SF HD and it was just above recommended level.

So I just happen to check the oil after 2 weeks from my last ride and the oil level was now in on its first line ! Like super low.
I warmed it up and rode for about 2 blocks just to see if I’m looking at it right.
checked it again and it’s definitely at the very first line.

is this normal?

any recommendations is very much appreciated.
what I type oil do you guys recommend?

thanks!!

In general, oil at the first line is no big deal. Now as to your original oil level...do you remember the state you checked the oil (hot, cold, warm, level, on side stand)?

As far as type of oil, check out the M8 sub-forum for more information than you can ever want on the subject.

Is this the same method you used to checked it back when you first picked up the bike (when the oil was above the top line)?

You need to ride it for 1/2 an hour to get an accurate read. When you get it home let it idle for about 30 seconds while upright (this give the pump time to empty the sump). Then shut the bike off, put it on the jiffy stand and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle before you check it. You want the oil in the middle of the hash marks.

+1. A Youtuber that is also a Harley Mechanic (https://www.youtube.com/user/forevertrollin421) said that when doing an oil change, you don't just want to idle the bike for 15 mins or take a quick ride, you want to ride it for like 30 mins at highway speed to really get the engine warmed up enough. I didn't do that, when I changed my oil at 7k miles on my M8 Streetbob, I was a quart low. But after seeing his video, it might have just been low because it wasn't warmed up enough. I probably didn't get all the oil out.

IIRC, the manual says the oil should be around half way up the stick when cold. When sufficiently hot, it should be towards the top, since it expands when hot. But like the others said, probably best to check the oil section of this site for more thorough explanations.

If you're really worried, since you bought the bike at ~3k miles, I'm assuming they did the 1k mile service, but I believe it calls for another service at 5k miles. You're pretty close, so if you're worried, do an oil change using the method mentioned above and measure out how much you get. Like I said, I was a quart low, but I didn't ride it for .5 hr first, I just warmed it up in the garage, which probably explains the presumed loss.

This is what I do also, however, the manual says to idle it on the jiffy stand. It makes a significant difference. Idle leaning on the jiffy stand and you will read a lower level and put in more oil to get the level you want. This is because more oil remains in the engine.
