Let it idle upright for 2 minutes after its hot. Check it in the same spot every time, on the side stand. For some reason these softails are very picky as to where and how to check the oil.
I never have to add oil between changes to my 18 Heritage 114 ( 4qts and 20ozs of HD 20/50 dino). I only check it hot every 700 to 1000 miles. Other than that I check it cold and as long as it's at least 1/4 up the stick and it always is I ride on. I have a spot marked in my garage where I park it so it is in the same spot. Like I said they are picky.

And if you are adding too much oil, you may see some oil action coming out your breathers in the air filter/throttle body intake.

Just so you do not have to create another post about oil leaking down from your air filter.

You can thank me later. YW

As mentioned above, make sure you check your oil the way the manual instructs. Check it cold before you crank it up, then follow the correct procedure on a hot start. You'll get different measurements, I promise.

What you describe is normal. I had the same experience. Good advice from others that I won't repeat. One add, don't be in a hurry to switch to synthetic oil. Straight oil helps with break-in. I switched to synthetic products other than Harley at 5k and haven't had any problems since.

Just use dino and change it every 2500 to 3000. I had an 05 Ultra and an 07 Ultra that I used syn in and the 05 was an oil burner and the 07 stuck a valve at 40,000 miles. I have used dino since, in my 10 Street Glide, my 15 Road King and now my 18 Heritage. The 10 SG and 15 RK never used any oil from day one and the SG had 45,000 miles on it when I sold it. My 18 Heritage hasn't used any oil from day one (21,000 miles). No more syn for me.
