* HOW TO * under fifty bux *
Bored with the cowbell I painted a stripe down the centre and arrowhead 2/3 of the way up. I did this about 6 months ago without sanding. Im sure it would easily scrape off,if I wanted to remove it. Cost 0$. I call it " Portrait

Ok I hope nobody has posted this, but I don't want to go through 125 pages to make sure! Mods can delete if necessary. I was tinkering with a way to detach my rigid mount saddlebags more quickly when jrk5892 started a thread on easy brackets or ghost brackets. I wanted to have special bolts machined that would hold the HD QD sissy bar hardware with threads sticking out the other end to hold the bags on with a cap bolt so they would still look nice with the bags off and just the nut for decoration. It's likely been done before , but I thought this up all myself.
So I removed the hardware and the tin plate that sits inside your fender for bolting stuff to. we all have these unless we have already modded our fenders. Depending on your model you will need to figure out what size bolts to buy.
I went to the local hardware and spent about 6 bucks on low profile 3/8th inch nuts.some long 3/8ths bolts and cap bolts and a few washers.
pic 1 is the HD QD sissy bar mounting hardware
pic 2 is the same hardware with the bolts running from inside the fender, with the low profile nuts holding them together.
pic 3 is the bags being held on by the cap bolts
pic 4 is inside the bag cap bolt
pic 5 is the unfortunate gap left when the bags are off.
And then SH_01FXDWG gave me the brilliant idea to get 3/8th " lug nuts, which will cover this gap beautifully as soon as i can find some! right now all I can find iare 1/2 " and up. Thanks again SH !
I torqued the low profile bolts QD hardware at 30 ft lbs and the saddlebags at 25 ft lbs so that way when I remove the bags I don't have to mess wjth the other half coming loose on me each time!
Use some thin washers to make sure you don't damage your bags and they are on or off in 2 minutes with a 9/16ths wrench or socket.
For 6 bucks at the local hardware and a few laps around the mind bend Compared to 150.00$$ and if you have rigid mount bags and are cheap like me! You have an easy fix!

This is the hardware needed to install one side of the set up minus the thin washers which I didn't have that night when Joe asked me to show him some pics of my idea in the making!
i hope you got it JoeKnapp 'cause I never heard back from you!
the gold colored tin plate is what I removed from inside the fender and the whole thing takes 10 minutes a side.

nice post maddghost. i did the same on my bike but used threaded rod instead. a neat little trick to cover the thread portion is to remove the cap nut and slide a 9/16" socket over the nut and threads then reinstall the cap nut. or you can do as i did and bore out the black spacers that come with the bags to fit over the nut. it cleans it up a bit.

Another copied idea with a twist. I decided to recycle. I found a new use for those CDs that crap out when you try to burn them. Beats using them for coasters.

I've tried runnin cd's as an a/c cover but they keep snapping and cracking. The roads in my area are horrendous.
That is why I chose to try just regular CD-Rs, I'm tend to get a bad burn every now and then and all I buy are the black ones. Now I can just save them instead of can them.
