Does the welding process make anything "permanent" as in once your solid you can't replace certain pieces?
It just makes the bolts permanent, if anything related failed you'd have to replace the whole mess regardless of the welds.

Just a thought for those who are welding the bolts: I would think the rotor should (theoretically) be balanced. I would make sure all of the welds are as uniform as possible.

good point. then again we are spoiled with rubber mounted motors, if my welds are alittle off then it shouldnt shake more than the old shovel head rigid frame scoot in the barn right?

I will weld mine up and let you know how it goes, if it does shake or make an issue, at least i will have more experience the second time i tear it down to replace it with the upgraded parts

i looked into the service manual and it tells us that they used the bolts so if you need to replace either one of the the parts you can without replacing them all. hmmmm how many times did they have someone replacing stators and rotors before using the old design? some things are better left untouched

Well I'm at 29,000 miles, had the knocking only on cold start up. I ordered the below parts, opened up the primary and found no damage. None of the screws backed out.

Only thing I found was a little wear on the primary case where the chain was hitting, you can see it in the second photo below, it was contacting the lower primary cover bolt hole, to the left of the kickstand.

I also noticed if you push the upper part of the primary chain up and down it gives the same knocking sound that I was getting on cold start up.

Default tagging also

i'm tagging this also for that video with sound of compensator failure...and it looks like i'm stalking PKelly

i spoke w/my HD Mech yesterday that just repaired my IPB failure (@10K mi) on this Rotor/Stator grenade Horror Film...he says, in time the compensator will (maybe the springs inside?) will not offset the Engine's natural tendancy to go backwards as the starter tries to crank the engine forward - AND you will hear this failure begin usually at start up with a clunk/clank sound. he says they recomend and replace these '06 POSs with the Sreaming Eagle compensator assembly and no more problems.

I highly recommend the Screaming Eagle over the stock 07-up replacement, wish I had bought it instead. Before my failure I had a quiet primary, none of that noise from the ramps smacking on start up and now it happens every time. I'll be replacing that POS in the near future.
