Default dealer labor hours for install

A dealer quoted me 5-1/2 hours yesterday to replace 4 speakers and install 2 amps.

I've not dug into it myself but that sounds excessive.

I've seen others advertising free install with purchase of the parts. Unfortunately, none close enough for me to use.

Anybody had this work done at a HD dealer?

Are you a handy guy? Ever done speakers in a car?

I wouldn't pay a dealer to do this, unless the answers to the above questions are NO. And I wouldn't EVER have Boom audio put into a motorcycle. You can do so much better, for less money, and doing it yourself will save even more.

Totally agree with mduncan!! Sad thing is. It was only a quote. Everything you need to do it yourself is right here on this forum. More knowledge here than any Harley Tech and it won't cost you a dime.

Default What's better?

mduncan62,

What is better and why?

Assume you've heard the Stage II somewhere?

Just about anything you could pick would be better than Boom.

I'll tell you what I have at the moment.

I bought this kit on Ebay.

Bought these speakers and amp from sonic electronics.
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...-PN4.520D.html Got the amp on sale for $92.

Got the speakers on sale, 2 pairs $108.

Got these adapter rings.

I can tell you for sure, because my CVO had boom, that the system I put in sounds more crisp, clear, and is so much louder than boom, it's not even funny.

I can turn this up as loud as I need, and it's still clear. I could have opted for more expensive speakers, and I might when I decide what that would be. Maybe kappa's.

I'm not going to win an audio competition, but I could care less about that. I wanted good sound, and to be able to hear it when running at highway speed. Boom provided none of those.

With the radio kit, I retained the thumb controls, Simple install. Speaker install may have taken 2 hours. Uppers and lowers for me. I wasn't in a hurry. The head and amp swap probably an hour and a half with soldering. I had some additional things to figure out, since It's a cvo they already had wiring for an amp. So I got a diagram, and soldered what I needed for the new setup, and capped the rest.

mduncan62,

Thanks for the parts list. I'll look at that stuff too.

Any knowledge of the Boom Stage II system?

I haven't been able to find anybody that's heard it yet.

I haven't heard it, but if it says "Boom" in the name, I'd be very skeptical. Especially with the price of boom. I can tell you, if you buy it, rip it out (like everyone else with Boom) and try to sell it you'll be pennies on the dollar, if that.

You can buy boom, and really have no idea what you are getting, or you can put tried and true tested equipment in and know what you are getting. If something sucks, people on here are going to tell you that. If stuff kicks ***, they are going to tell you.

Kinda funny to see people write it off BECAUSE it is Harley branded...on a HD forum.

So many own a Harley BECAUSE it's "Harley".
