Hi, going to power my 6x9 pioneers with the JL hx280/4 or the Jl mhx 280/4, or are they the same one, thanks
Virtually the same. One is $150 and the other is $250. Get the $150 model. JL basically put a little lipstick on the older model and jacked the price up $100.

Not true at all brother. I had a chat with my JL rep over these asking the same questions. The newer version is a tad bigger because of a better heat sink and circuitry -- short answer from him was improved technology. Same as the RD series amps are spec'd exactly the same as the XD line and although less expensive Henry my shop partner tells me they're louder and cleaner sounding than the XD's. This is JL Audio man, not some second rate company....they don't put lipstick on the same amp.
I haven't heard them yet but will when I get home. I just wouldn't jump the gun and tell folks it's virtually the same amp with lipstick on it without talking to someone at JL Audio first who knows, or at a minimum hearing both. I also didn't say "magic" circuitry, I said improved technology. I am a dealer for this company and represent their product --- no reason at all they would need to blow smoke to me over the cheapest amp in their line up.
Can find no physical difference in specs that would matter to me on a sled.
If anything it's a failure of JL Audio marketing to clearly identify improvements. Phasing the MHX out fixes such marketing problem.
At this point it's like "new and improved" motor oil man. The previous motor oil has been damn good stuff so the manufacturer is gonna have to convince me that I need to pay $100 more for the same exact ingredients listed on the box.
As stated above, it won't matter in due time as the MHX has been discontinued.
I think you will be just fine with the MHX version. It was a great amp a day ago, it's still a great amp today. When they were first released they listed for 229.00; after about a year they were down to 179.00 when the MX line was announced and now on close out for 150.00 bucks. I suspect the new ones will drop in price soon to that 229.00 mark by most retailers. I'll see what I can get the new ones for.
