You can install WHIM software that way but you can not do the required Flash. With out the Flash it will not work.
As for $99 for the flash find a new dealer I paid $124 for the full install and flash.

I found a dealer who only charged $20 for the flash. Installed and updated the unit myself with the online software.

 

twice ( initial was flashed by dealer, two updated done by me )

 

My understanding is that the flash to the BCM is to show the unit installed, no flash required to keep the WHIM updated, BUT, not an expert so could be wrong other than I am having no problems and it shows as being current release ...

 

So, to make the point clear for those considering getting the WHIM....

The WHIM will have to be flashed by the dealer. There is a charge for that (unless the dealer does it for free as a part of the installation). You can update the WHIM yourself on your computer.

any updates or mods to BCM require expensive stuff ( Dealer Flash )
software updates to Boom or WHIM are done with either a USB Stick or Laptop depending on update ( see instructions on software page )
