Is the Sony MEX-72BT a better system than the stock Harmon Kardon
in my '12 FLHTK ? Does it have any more power ? It's not very pricey
but I'm still wondering if it's worth the swap .
Yes it is but I dont think you can just replace the head unit. unless you change out the 2 ohm speaker too. One upgrade leads to another until you are all the way down the rabbit hole.

Thx I hadn't thought about that . I don't see on the website
what speakers it needs . I'll have to check further .
Most after market head units are 4 ohm. It really does need to be done all together or not at all.
The amp and speakers can be found in the Classified here if budget is an issue, Some of the guys here change out audio gear more often than they kiss their wife.
Yes the Sony sound quality and options are much better than stock. You will need HU, mounting kit and handlebar control unit. If you don't want to spend a bunch more on speakers and amp, you can swap out those stock speakers with some cheap/decent sounding Polk or Kicker. Kicker does make a 5.25, but I would suggest going with 6.5" and adapter kit.

The dealer says the unit works with the 2 ohm speakers .

This unit is supposed to be plug & play .
Still investigating .
Unless you run an amp and better speakers you're really wasting your money. Switch to some decent 6.5's and buy an amp. You can do this for a reasonable amount.
