Sound system speakers specs questions
Hi everyone.
I recently bought a 2011 FLHTK and would like to upgrade my sound system slowly one step at a time. For now I would just like to change the stock speakers with something a bit more powerfull.
I am keeping the stock radio and CB.
Before I go and buy new speakers I would just like to confirm the following from what I have read and searched on this forum.
Both front and rear speakers are 5.25 inch speakers, therefore I am looking at the Polk Audio MM521 speakers to change them easily without any hassle to make them. I assume these Polk speakers would just be plug and play, worst case would be to change connectors.
Are these MM521 speakers waterproof?
You must only insert other 2 ohm speakers, correct? Reason I do not know yet but assume its because of the HK stock unit.
To get marine speakers in South Africa that are rated to the correct specs I require is quite difficult and therefore I would like to get it right the first time. The only 5.25, 2 ohm marine speakers I can fine here are the MM521's but Hogtunes can be found on Amazon but shipping makes it a bit expensive.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

you are correct in the sizes sir but with a twist. In your shoes, this is what I'd do;
Get the 6.5" adapter rings for the fairing and install a set of Polk MM651 speakers up there. Make sure to wrap them in polyfil like a cocoon if you can get your hands on it. It's the stuff inside of pillows.
For the rears, the same Polk MM651 speakers will fit perfectly in the pods without modification. You simply need to drill new screw holes. Also line the pod with polyfil.
Yes sir you're correct. The stock radio is stable at a 2 ohm load so you want to match speakers to this. The Polks are perfect for this as they are 2.7 ohms.
The Polk MM line of speakers come with crossovers so you'll simply connect your existing speaker wires to the input on the crossovers (front and rear) and then the other side of the crossovers have 2 sets of wires coming out of it to go to the speakers, 1 set for the woofer, the other set for the tweeter. The connectors are already on those wires and they simply plug into the speakers. Pay attention to the connectors as they only go on one way.
All Polk speakers are marine certified so you're good there as well.
I wouldn't waste the time or $ replacing the 5.25" speakers with 5.25" speakers when you can put 6.5" in there. There is that much of a difference!

Choppie ,,,,,
don't forget to take a look at the J&M Performance Series 7 1/4" speakers for the fairing position (even more sound than the 6.5's)) ,,, see http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail....D=HCSK-7252GTM ,,,,,
as for impedance matching to the Harley HK radio ,,,, ANY speaker with a rated impedance between 2 & 16 ohms will work fine ,,,,,, you just want to make sure that you don't hang a speaker on the output of the Harley HK radio LOWER than 2 ohms ,,,,
