Hey all, Just finished Blacking out the front end of my 09 street glide and installed 12" apes. Before I install fairing I want to upgrade speakers. I bought the 6.5" adapter rings and was wondering if there are any clearence issues with 6.5: speakers. Some manufatures make slim fit designs. Is this necessary? I was looking at MB quart and Polk audio speakers. The MB quart look really deep and concerned if it will foul with the fairing.....Thoughts? Input would be great.....searched the forum, and was unable to find anything.... Thanks in advance. Cheers.....
If you're only going to run two speakers, get the Polk MM651's and Rockford Fosgate PBR300x2 and you will also need a 10awg amp install kit. You won't notice much of a difference just adding bigger speakers. Believe me, you won't be disappointed with this combo!
I haven't run across a speaker that interferes with the fairing cap yet, MB Quart included. GP has you covered with correct advice..
Stock head unit and simply replacing speakers, you need to stick with 2 ohm speakers
As stated above, if adding an amp into the mix that changes everything however if you change speakers now, then add the PBR300x2 into the mix or later on as rbferg suggests is a great option. Amp, speakers, speaker adapters, and a little bit of wiring will run you about $350 and a little bit of your time to get it installed.
what's electrical tape? I don't EVER use that stuff for anything.
On your wire connections lots of people like to solder and use heat shrink to cover the splice. I since 1985 have used 3M electrical connectors for everything except larger power wire installation such as 0 or 0/0 size wiring where crimping is simply not a reliable option. Having the proper tool to crimp with is essential as well.
it's actually pretty easy to do.. just takes a little time and patience. if your specific build is not in the step by step sticky, let me know and I'll put it there..
