hey all , my bike , which is new to me, came with a hawg wired system, but after a few hours on the bike, the speakers start missing. i havent pulled the fairing yet, but was thinking of an upgrade.
heres what i got from the dealers records if any of you guys work for harley
2446 screw button head
cx504-70 speakers
psc3004 4 channel amp
rx504-50 rx series 4 ohm coaxial s
what would be a good up grade for not a lot of cash?
2 good sets of speakers is where I'd start. For the rears you're kinda limited because of the depth of the pods. The fairing though, check out the Biketronics BT7P1 7.1".
The rear pods, a good upgrade would be the Polk DXi650...

If that's the case and you're running a stock head unit, then we have to look at this from a whole different perspective and I'll explain now why your sound is cutting out.
2006 and new bikes (actually I think it was sometime in late 05) use 2ohm speakers. Your 2003 uses 8 ohm speakers. If you put a speaker on an amplified source (your stock radio) that has a lower impedance (ohms) than what the amplified source is capable of handling then it will heat up and clip on you. Clipping is "cutting in and out". That's what is going on here because the speakers you have installed (if they're the speakers listed above) are 4 ohm speakers. Your stock head unit cannot handle those speakers natively so you have a couple of options here.
1.) find an 8 ohm speaker (nary impossible to find other than HD stock replacements)
2.) add a 4 channel amp that will handle those speakers...
Also if you keep running 4 ohm speakers on that radio, you will eventually toast the outputs channels from overheating it.
no Nutz, the amp is still there, i'm going off the service records, " the old amp and XM radio have been removed"
ah ok.. then I'd go after speaker replacements before doing anything else. This way if you find that you're still lacking after speaker replacement, you've already set the stage for any further upgrades.
