Distortion
Does distortion from the factory HK head unit increase with volume level when feeding a amp? Meaning, is the signal to the amp cleaner at a lower volume level than it is at a higher volume level? The reason I ask is I just installed my new 7.1s and I'm feeding them off of a ss 4.520d. I have it set up currently with the gain set at about 10:30-11:00 and my volume can be turned up to about 3/4 of the way before I start to destort. I used ultras tune by ear method and with my gains turned all the way down I can play at full volume so I backed it down to 3/4 volume and as I said earlier ended up with the gains at 10:30-11:00 which is similar to where the gains were set with my polks but now with the 7.1 I can run the hu volume much higher. So back to my original question. Would I be better off turning the gains up and running the uh at 1/2 volume rather than 3/4 volume? Sorry not trying to split hairs here but I know someone here will be able to answer the question and leave me alittle more educated than before thanks

Yep. I think it's been noted that the stock HK using the speaker outs as a signal source will start to distort at less than half volume. Turning the volume down and the gains up might help.

Very good to know!! I'm smart enough to think of these things just not smart enough to know the answers quite yet, lol. Thanks for the info. This head unit is on thin ice... I feel another $500 vanishing from my checking account as we speak!!

You thinking of upgrading the HK with RCA outs, or you going to replace it?
