I have a 2008 street glide, installed a PBR300x2 with Polk Audio speakers a year ago and it was good. This last winter I installed lower speakers, Infinity's, and KST Mayhem 10" bars, everything was great then i started blowing fuses.Keep thinking it was the wiring in the bars after a few attempts I finally tracked it to the head unit itself. seems to have a direct short.
So the big question what are the best options for replacement? I want to keep the handle bar controls, any and all options would be great.
I called my local dealer they said it was common for them to fail they send them out for repair and it usually runs about $600. to fix. that's too much when i'm sure i could do better with a after market unit.
Biketronics, j&m, and Hawg wired all offer handlebar control modules for your bike. As far as head units you can pick up a stock one and avoid buying the retro radio kit but you will pay anywhere from $250-$350 typically for a stock replacement. Or an aftermarket head unit can be had from anywhere between $100- $400 in most cases. Typically $200 for the handlebar control adapter and $200 for a nice aftermarket radio that will give you a lot better sound quality. Biketronics offers complete kits with Sony or kenwood head units, they will set you up right and are great people.
if no AVC required, look at Axxess ASWC-1 / Metro combo (total for around 70-80 bucks on the web) for handle bar controls. plenty of info on this forum around this option.
The metro mount kit is different from f.e. Biketronics.
Radio - as mentioned above... whatever you like... 100 to xxx usd. some on the forum even run flip screen (GlacierPearl).
Restled with this decison for a couple weeks before finally deciding on the Kenwood KDC-X998. Lots of good choices out there, just need to decide on features. Tune tray, CD or not, HD Radio, how many USB connections, etc.
You could send your HU to Iron Cross and they will hook you up for </> $300 I think.
Will be selling my fully functional stock HK unit if interested in just replacing.
I just installed a sony head unit . I got it off ebay water proof and your Ipod go's inside of it . Sony digital media player. I love this thing .Check it out about 280.00. ?

Careful now....as far as I know there is NO waterproof SONY.
They send a cover for the inside fairing and a splash guard for washing . It's a biketronic set up 7.1 speakers and hog tune tweeter pod and amp 300 watts .I can go 75-80 and it's clear as a bell
