I have access to a 1972 FX frame and associated body parts to begin a build I want to take on. Cane anyone tell me if I can put an FL engine transmission of similar year into this frame? On e more crazy question, would the neck on this bike accept and FL front end of similar vintage?
Yup. A buddy's been running an FLH front on a '76 superglide for years it is 4" over and handles great. Shovelheads are great! Just about everything would fit on anything else.
A 4 speed shovel frame will accept any knuckle, pan or shovel head motor. Any 4 speed transmission with the right mainshaft will also fit. Remember after 1970 the title goes with the frame.
The Big Twin frame was the same frame through the shovel years. The only basic difference between the FX and the FL was the front end. When Harley made the FX, they took a FLH (Electra Glide) and put an XL (Sportster) front end on it. That is the FX. They changed the rear fender and gas tank. But the frame and associated motor and transmission parts are the same.
