I'm hopefully picking up my first Harley in a few hours and the insurance want to know what the HD code is for the bike.
My bike started life as an 883 hugger but only the engine and box remain (and thats now a 1200) as its got a new hardtail frame and springer front end etc.
So do still refer to it an an XL1200 or something else?

I would imagine you put whatever the VIN will read as. Then make sure you have an agreed value for the modifications

The carrier may or may not have an issue with frame and suspension modifications

 

It is what ever current title says it is Give them the VIN and they know right away. Keep in mind it will only insure the bike as stock. You must ensure you have coverage for addon's . Many polices include up to $3,000 but you must make sure. If you want more you must pay more.
The only thing on it for any real value would be the front end. If frame VIN has been changed it will be insured as a build and the cost goes up. Some will not insure it. If built from a salvage titled frame the game changes again for you.

 

It`s a Harley engine and transmission, but it is not a Harley Davidson Motorcycle.

 

Be prepared for sticker shock and maybe hunting for an insurer that will cover that bike. They will consider it a custom build unless you are willing to take a beating if something ever happens to it and you insure it as a stock model which they are pushing you to currently. Look up blue book on that year piglet models and you'll understand why.

Being in the UK you got different rules than we do over here stateside.

 

so if you change your exhaust, or upgrade the forks, Maybe change the bars or swap out the seat does it stop being a Harley?

or if you take a frame and weld in a hard tail….
so maybe a Harley is defined by the rear lugs on the frame?

Come on give me a clue which bit do you have to keep to make it a HD?

Does it have a HD VIN stamped into the head stock? If not it is not a HD frame. What is on the V5?

If the pipes or other bits are changed on an otherwise stock HD that would just be considered a modification. I tell my insurer I have a stage 1 upgrade. They are good with that. You have a custom bike.

Give them the VIN and the letter it came with.
Put liability and uninsured on it. No use insuring a hobby. Waste of money.

Someone else is just going to collect it. Your better off if you have dependents, to have term life insurance.

And do drive carefully and watch out from others. And wear a full helmet with face shield and safety glasses on that bike. ​​​​​​

That is a too cool Triumph. I have a book cover of it on my 12th grade English Webster. My dream back then. I had a 250 Zundapp then. So you can understand why.

the title determines the bike, but the title in America is made because of what is stamped in the frame near the steering neck.
Here in Ky, which is in the us, if i buy a new bike or a bike from another state, the sheriff wants to see if the title and numbers on the frame match.

The reason the bike is not a Harley Davidson is because the entire chassis was made by someone else.
