As soon as I stepped through the door at R&R Cycles, Reg Sr. spoke up and explained how they figured out some of the ultra big inch motors starting problems. That is, to change out the Compensating sprocket to a solid sprocket, problem solved! While the starter is turning over the moto, the comp sprocket winds up and between compression strokes it unloads against the starter stopping it.So mine is on order. Also had a great visit with Randy T."King of Cubes" and Dan, his computer programmer.
ok so what do you do when its belt drive primary and there is no compensatinf sprocket.Have 127 with 13:1 and even with releases it pain if not lite after few turns and with 3 inch extended swingarm forget push starting.have big starter next thing is 450 cca battery.
You are in deep ****! 13 to 1,WOW! you running alcohol? It was the belt drive bikes that made the R&R crew aware of the problem. My bikes have 500+cca batteries with 1.4 kw starters and they do the trick.Good Luck.
Thanks for the info, already have 2/0 fine wire cables,2 grounds, 1 positive, all soldered.Have the biggest starter that will fit the bike, and ahigh amp battery over 500cca.The bike starts fine, just had to learn when to let go of the button or smoke the starter. The minor problem now is the comp sprocket, and that solution is at R&R.
My 127 is 10 to 1. I have a 2.4 KW starter and use a 350 CCA Big Boar battery. I also have manual compression releases which Iuse most of the time. It spins it really fast not that it even needs to because it starts instantly.
Dog,
Don't forget that the starter turns the clutch basket which turns the engine. If you change the size of the engine sprocket you can gain/lose mechanical advantage over the engine. Any change in overall gear ratio could be made up in the rear gearset. Just food for thought!!!!
Actually the final fix should show up here today from R&R Cycles. That is another motor sprocket, with shims, nut, and washer. They discovered that the big inch motors, were winding the comp sprocket up when it tried to unwind, and against a compression stroke it would stop the starter.Eliminating the comp unit, the starter only has to fight the compressioncycles.Problem Solved!!!!!!
