Hijack..... sort of.

I like the black Kiwi idea myself, but I was considering using some neatsfoot oil on mine afterward for some added protection and some waterproofing qualities. I've used neatsfoot oil for ages, but never tried it on something that soaks up as much uv rays and road dirt as saddlebags. Any thoughts?

OK, I'm a lazy slob, I know. I bought a used set of correct HD bags for my wide glide. They were in really nice shape but faded and dirty. I didn't have much money in them and I just wanted to make them look better.

I blew them off inside and out with compressed air to get the dust out of the cracks. Then I scrubbed them with windex and let them dry thoroughly. Next I dyed them with Kiwi black liquid dye (not polish.) Then I polished them with Kiwi paste shoe polish.

Next I used Simcom's suggestion and went over them with mink oil to waterproof them. The mink oil also made them look smoother and more natural.

They look brand new. I don't know if I hurt them any, but hey, they were old and cheapand now they look new.

Mink oil is about the best thing I've ever used on leather. Use it regularily on my work boots - keeps them in good shape in spite of the mortar, cement, sheetrock dust and other crap I wallow around in all day. They're also exposed to a lot of water. Other advantage is that it's cheap to buy. Used it on my saddle bags since the day I got them and they still look like new even though they've seen some ugly weather in the short few months I've had them on the bike.
