There are a number of replacement tail lights that will phit the stock mounting, and give a lower profile. You can even get a smoked lense that will get rid of the red on the back.
I put a Kuryahkyn smoked laydown Panacea LED on. Less of a profile then stock, not red, and it just plugs right into the stock phitting.
I would say find a trashed fender on e-bay and make a template from the hole and cut the size piece you need that can be either welded on or used as a backer plate. other than that options are slim.
