Default Supertrapp packing?

My supermeg discolored and they sent me a new shell, which I decided to install today. Pulled the old muffler off, removed the screws holding the guts in, and tapped out the guts with a broom handle. Out pops the disc and baffle assembly, but the fiberglass packing was stuck to the inside of the muffler. Totally destroyed trying to get it out, so I'm grounded until I can get new packing. Looks like I'll have to mail order it which means days wait.

Is this something I can fab up? Maybe a muffler shop? Or should I just bite the bullet and wait for the Supertrapp repack kit?

Magnaflow uses rock wool. Some others use untreated fiberglass. If you're adventurous you should be able to find one or the other at the local building supply.

Another idea would be wood burner service and supply shops.

Thanks man. So I'm probably overthinking it that an exhaust may be designed for specific packing?

I'm sure some do use special blends and densities to tune the sound but it's nothing exotic. Just has to create a static air layer and be heat resistant.

Old glass packs would break down their fiberglass surfing and blow it out the back end in pretty short order.

Rock wool is quite a bit more durable.

I would shy away from trying a pink fiberglass bat. The glue they use to hold it together may not handle the heat. I'm not sure.

I don't think you'd be out much by trying. If you don't like the result, yank it out.

Of course, you'd have to be willing to assume all he risk...

When I was running the Supermeg, I removed the fiberglass and repacked the core with fine stainless steel wool. Slightly less sound muffling but it should hold up way better than the glass.

Interesting. Where did you get it? Motorcycle specific, or Home Depot?

I've heard people have had good results wrapping the baffles with stove cord. I'm going to experiment with my Pro Pipe. Heat resistant up to 1000F.

Something like this

I used the FMF 4 stroke packing. I wrapped a bit more on my Bassani in an effort to hush it some. It's the stuff at the top half in the pic. It is just a blanket that you cut, and wrap around the core.

Spoke to Supertrapp this morning and they said while I could use regular packing, the newer pipes came with something called "pillow pack" which is quieter then regular. Since it was what came with it I ordered it. They're in Ohio so hopefully it'll only be a day or two. My Jeep misses me so I'll give it a little love. It's going to rain tomorrow anyway.
